Cville SHRM Member of the Month - September 2024
Congrats to our member of the month, Jared Ross, SHRM-CP, Human Resources Coordinator at Madison Wood Preservers!
- How long have you been a member of Cville SHRM?
I have been a member of Cville SHMRM for the past three years.
- Why did you join Cville SHRM?
I joined Cville SHRM because I wanted to join a community of knowledgeable HR professionals who support one another. Also, I wanted to expand my network and gain insights from HR professionals with diverse backgrounds and experiences HR is all about understanding people, and the more I can learn from individuals who see the world differently than I do, the better I can serve my organization and help foster a more inclusive workplace.
- What’s your favorite part of being a member of Cville SHRM?
My favorite part is how welcoming everyone is. From the moment I joined Cville SHRM, I’ve felt nothing but warmth and acceptance. Whether I’m at a large event or having a one-on-one conversation, everyone I’ve met has been incredibly kind and respectful. It’s a community where you feel instantly included, which has made the experience truly special.
- What is your current occupation?
I am the HR Coordinator for Madison Wood Preservers, a local pressure treated lumber manufacturer. As a team of one I get to assist our organization in all of the aspects of HR, an experience that has been challenging and very rewarding.
- What do you love most about job?
There are two things I love most about my job. First, it’s the people. At Madison Wood, our commitment to the highest quality isn’t just a goal—it’s something every employee embodies in their work. The dedication and pride that everyone brings to the table make it a great environment to be part of. Second, I love how decisions are made within our organization. More often than not, we make decisions collaboratively. I’ve always believed that we’re stronger together, and this approach to decision-making strengthens our team and builds a sense of shared ownership.
- Who inspires you?
I’m inspired by leaders who prioritize empathy and people-first approaches in business, like Brené Brown and Simon Sinek. Their philosophies have shaped how I approach my work in HR.
- What advice would you give to someone who wants to enter HR?
My advice is to be prepared to look, listen, and learn constantly. HR isn’t just about policies and procedures; it’s about truly understanding people’s needs and challenges and finding ways to help them succeed. But beyond that, be brave. HR requires you to make tough decisions, advocate for employees, and sometimes challenge the status quo. It takes courage to stand up for what’s right, even when it’s difficult. If you approach your role with empathy, an open mind, and bravery, you’ll make a meaningful impact.
- What’s something about you (a fun fact) that not many people know?
I’m a big science fiction fan, and I’m currently in the middle of reading the Dune series.
- What’s the next place on your travel bucket list?
Seeing the pyramids in Egypt! I’ve always been fascinated by the history and mystery surrounding them. Visiting such an iconic and ancient wonder of the world would be an incredible experience, and it’s been at the top of my travel bucket list for a long time.
- What’s one item you can’t live without?
My Tempur-Pedic bed, hands down! Good sleep is essential, and after a long day, there’s nothing better than sinking into a bed that’s both supportive and incredibly comfortable. It’s the one item I truly can’t live without—it makes a world of difference for my rest and overall well-being.
